You're supposed to be the leading lady of your own life, for God's Sake
-Iris (fictional character from the film, "The Holiday")
Fictional screenwriter, "Arthur Abbott" gives "Iris" a brief pep talk. | "The Holiday" is a 2006 romantic-comedy that was written and directed by Nancy Meyers. Normally, I'm not the world's biggest romantic comedy fan, but "The Holiday's" underlying message makes it one of my favorite movies. In the scene to the left, a wise screenwriter (Arthur Abbott) gives Kate Winslet's character (Iris) life-changing advice about the need to take control of her own life. The first time I heard Arthur Abbott's little pep talk, I'm pretty sure I gasped, hit "pause" and watched it again. I might have even cried a little ...his advice was simple, but it really hit home. |

Heard: Who was one of the most influential adults in your childhood and in what ways did they inspire you? Te'Andrea: There were actually two; my mother and my grandmother. My mother was a single parent. She taught me to be strong and independent. My grandmother stepped in and became like a second parent when necessary. She was really funny and loved to make people laugh. In her later years, she had cancer but she maintained her sense of humor. She made her doctors and nurses laugh. She was always really big on thinking of others and trying to help them. |
Heard: What did you want to be when you grew up?
Te'Andrea: What didn't I want to be is the question! (laughs) I wanted to be a doctor, a marketing consultant, and a massage therapist, and then a journalist. Eventually, I went to school for journalism.
Heard: Was there a particular incident in your life that made you realize you wanted to make a career out of helping people?
Te'Andrea: Over the years I've had moments of clarity, yes. For example, after my grandmother died I had a strong desire to help others. But ultimately that aspect of my personality is simply a part of who I am, which is a result of the way I was raised.
Heard: Are there any well-known personalities or public figures who you admire? If so, who are they and why do you admire them?
Te'Andrea: Yes, Yandy Smith Harris. I admire her humility, her loyalty as a friend, wife, and mother. She's also an excellent entrepreneur and I get the impression that she knows what she wants out of life and who she is.
Heard: Can failure ever be a good thing?
Te'Andrea: The only way you can fail is if you quit. To "fail" is to simply make a mistake, which is merely an opportunity for growth.
Heard: Why is having faith in oneself important?
Te'Andrea: That's the only way I can survive, that's what's helped me through all kinds of tough situations.
Heard: What defines success?
Te'Andrea: Never giving up until you reach your goal and then continuing to push.
Heard: What's one or two of your favorite quotes?
Te'Andrea: "Walk by faith, not by sight". I like this one because even if someone's bank account says zero, tomorrow may be different. And I also like the quote, "Faith without works is dead." This reminds me that if you have faith but you don't back it up with action then that faith is null and void.
I won't give away what happens at the end of "The Holiday", but I will say that if you contact an inspiring motivator like Te'Andrea, then you'll soon be on your way to discovering your own talent and potential!
