I think prom is just about enjoying yourself.
TIP #1- Be Open minded!
Instead of predetermining that you absolutely MUST wear a baby blue floor-length dress or whatever, be open to a variety of colors and styles. If you go into prom season with an open mind, you're more likely to have fun shopping and end up with a dress that you're a thousand percent satisfied with. Here's an equation to keep in mind: nit-picky perfectionist expectations+ shopping for a big event= an absolute disaster. So, be open-minded while you shop!
Tip #2- Shop Around!
Does your prom dress have to come from your favorite store? Nope. With this in mind, give yourself at least three weeks to browse stores and corner boutiques that you've never visited. This works in harmony with Tip #1 about embracing an open-minded outlook. So, instead of waiting until the last minute, start shopping well in advance and be willing to check out stores that you typically overlook. Who knows, your ideal dress might be waiting for you in one of those stores!
Tip #3 -Know Your Colors
While its smart to try outfits in all kinds of colors, it's also a great idea to keep in mind what colors make your skin tone pop. Typically, olive skin tones (think Jennifer Lopez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Halle Berry) look amazing with all kinds of colors, but especially in green or pink.
Fair skin (like Saoirse Ronan, Kate Winslet, and Elle Fanning) looks exceptionally pretty with light blue and pastel fabrics.
Warm caramel skin tones (think Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, and Kerry Washington) are absolutely stunning when paired with colors like red and burnt orange.
Beautiful dark skin (like Damaris Lewis, Lupita Nyong'o, and Oluchi Onweagbais), much like olive skin, looks incredible with nearly any color, but is especially pretty when paired with a bold red or light yellow/gold.
Being open-minded when it comes to shopping, giving every store and boutique an equal opportunity, and keeping in mind which colors work best with your skin tone can lead you to the perfect dress! But what's even more important than the dress is that you have an amazing time at your prom! So, have fun shopping and an even better time making memories with your friends at the prom!
